Border Fencing: Dispute: Bangladesh objects to India's construction of barbed wire fences along the border, particularly within 150 yards of the international border, citing a 1975 agreement that restricts such structures. India's Perspective: India argues that the fencing is necessary for security, to prevent cross-border crimes like smuggling and illegal immigration, and that it is not a military structure. Impact on Border Residents: The construction of fencing, especially in densely populated border areas, has led to practical challenges for local populations. Surveillance: India's use of CCTV and electronic surveillance systems to monitor the border has also raised concerns in Bangladesh about sovereignty and territorial integrity. 2. Water Sharing (Teesta River): Dispute: Bangladesh seeks a greater share of the waters of the Teesta River, a transboundary river, than it currently receives. Bangladesh's Position: Bangladesh is pushing for the realization of a billion-dollar project to secure its water needs, which is unlikely to lack support from China. India's Position: India has been reluctant to agree to a water-sharing agreement that would give Bangladesh a larger share of the Teesta River water. 3. Enclaves and Exclaves: Land Boundary Agreement (LBA): In 2015, a historic land boundary agreement was signed, resolving decades-old border disputes, including the exchange of enclaves and adverse possessions. Enclaves: The agreement addressed the issue of enclaves, which are areas of one country that are surrounded by the territory of another country. Adverse Possessions: The agreement also addressed adverse possessions, which are areas that one country has been occupying but that are legally owned by the other country. 4. Maritime Boundary Dispute: Arbitration: In 2009, Bangladesh initiated arbitration proceedings against India under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to resolve the maritime boundary dispute in the Bay of Bengal. Verdict: In 2014, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) awarded Bangladesh a large part of the Bay of Bengal, ending the maritime dispute between the two countries. 5. Other Issues: Illegal Immigration: The India-Bangladesh border is a hotspot for illegal immigration, cattle smuggling, human trafficking, and other illegal cross-border activities. Tensions: There have been reports of tensions along the border, including incidents of violence and clashes between border guards. Political and Economic Ties: Despite the border disputes, India and Bangladesh enjoy strong political and economic ties.
